America is forgetting the ideals that constitute the fabric of American
society by kicking the millions of undocumented illegal
immigrants currently residing in the United States to the curb like disposable commodities argues Robert Kuttner in a March 18th oped in the Boston Globe. The threat of terrorism is being utilized to justify the unhuman treatment and blatant exploitation of the immigrants, most of whom are here to contribute positively to our society while building better lives for themselves and their families. These
people are forced to drift aimlessly in society, as they continue to work hard, but are met with second rate status in society, denied the fundamental
rights essential for every individual to flourish in society. Kuttner cites a proposed bill in congress that seeks, for one, to deport all illegal immigrants at once, along with provisions to deny and chance at citizenship for these people. This exhibits the harsh demeanor with which these people are viewed and how we are blinded to their vast contribution to society. Kuttner adverts back to a time when immigration was essential to creating the ideal American society we strive for. When up until the mid 20th century immigrants were, for the most part, welcomed with open arms and seen as human beings with that will help construct the future while adding to the rich American culture. Today, we are using and abusing these people and depriving them of their basic rights. Kuttner's article could not be more true. These people work as
hard as any American citizen and like any American, want nothing more than a better life, or an opportunity at one. We must grant them this much. It is the least we can do to compensate for the hardship and poor treatment they have already endured.
