In an effort to stop attacks by the Kurdish Workers Party (PPK), a terrorist organization, Turkey has sent troops to
Iraq''s boarder, the only relatively stable part of the country. Yet the Kurdish northern Iraq refuses to hand over the leaders of the PPK, in the hopes that the Kurds can maintain
control of the North and use it to further the movement to create an independent Kurdistan. At the same time, the United States relies on the military
support of the Iraqi Kurdish forces to control the insurgency, and if an incursion were to occur, the US would be forced to decided between siding with Turkey, a NATO ally or continue to support the Iraqi Kurds. A Turkish intervention could further destabilize Iraq and hurt Turkey''s chances of being admitted into the European Union. The US, being allied with both Turkey and the Iraqi Kurds is in a position to improve relations between the two groups. It''s best for the Iraqi Kurds, who are already dependent of Turkish imports, to come to a resolution with Turkey, and stop the PPK.
