Vantage Point receives a rather grave review from the New York Times, particularly with regard to the
movie’s storyline, narrative flow and
direction. The movie is labeled as “a gimmick in search of a point”, the strained theme of it being the
assassination of the President of the United States, in the Spanish city of Salamanca. Though the film’s release date is set at a conveniently opportune time, i.e. the 2008 elections in America, what attracts more criticism is its weak dialogue, overstressed formatting and overplayed direction element that focuses on the single incident of assassination, rewinding to that moment repeatedly and showing it from diverse viewpoints of its main characters. Furthermore, casting was a bit thrown off with actors
playing unsuited roles, for example, Matthew Fox playing the bad guy and Sigourney Weaver not being given enough screen time as an actress of her standing might demand. Overall, movie is considered nothing out of the ordinary.
