Detroit`s City Council Wants Michigan Governor Granholm To Remove Mayor Kilpatrick
By: Tommy Elder, Jr.
In an alleged sex and politic scandal- Detroit, Michigan`s Mayor Kwame M. Kilpatrick faces allegations of perjury and obstruction of justice. On Tuesday- the Detroit City Council passed a resolution asking Michigan Governor Jennifer M. Granholm to remove him from office.
As reported by Nick Bunkley of the New York Times- in addition to its its request for the removal of Mayor Kilpatrick- the Detriot City Council voted to attempt to oust Mr. Kwame Kilpatrick because he allegedly violated the city charter. Both of these proposals passed by a vote of 5 to 4.
Reacting to the council`s request that Governor Granholm remove Mayor Kilpatrick- Ms. Granholm stated that she wanted to steer clear of intervention. While back in Detroit- the city council voted 7 to 2 to censure Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.
Immediately after this vote- Mr. Kilpatrick`s advocates said that the council`s resolution was `meaningless.` He noted that Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick ``would continue to govern the city effectively.``
To note his consternation with the current circumstances- Mr. Kilpatrick`s lead attorney i.e. Daniel K. Webb said- `I don`t know why you would waste hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars, in taxpaper money for a procedure that will not even be halfway over with at the time the criminal case will be over with, which will resolve the forfeiture issue.`
With Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick`s term in office ending in 2009- Mr. Webb noted that Mr. Kilpatrick will not step down regardless of the amount of pressure applied to him.
