Educational Improvements Revealed
By: Tommy Elder, Jr.
In his quest to lift
public school pupils in the United States to the top of the
educational escalator internationally-
President Barack Obama asked teachers unions, state employees, and parents of school students to stop the `relative decline of American education.` He asserted that the decline comes as `untenable for our economy, unsustainable for our democracy, and unacceptable for our children.`
During his address President Obama noted that too many Democrats placed road-blocks in the way of ``rewarding excellence in teaching with extra pay.``
Castigating Republicans as well- the President noted that large numbers of members of the GOP resist placing funds in early educational efforts.
If the need arises- President Barack Obama expressed his willingness to tackle the teachers` unions that expressed doubt on the effectiveness of the merit pay scheme. Similar to other countries- the commander-in-chief called for the establishment of national ``uniform academic achievement standards.``
As a spur to classroom innovations- President Barack Obama wants the removal of the cap on the number of charter schools imposed by some districts.
In the realm of higher education- the Obama Administration intends to broaden federal grants such as the Pell Grant and to link the awards` pay-outs with the inflation index.
