National Security Debate Electrify Election Discussions
In an effort to gain ground in the War on
Terrorism over the Democrats- President George Walker Bush unveiled a new strategy. Sheryl Gay Stolberg of the New York Times reported that Mr. Bush will introduce a bill that will merge the War on Terrorism with the War in Iraq. Some Democrats in their reaction to the president`s speech called Mr. Bush`s proposal weak in comparison to their plan. They said- `we`re strong and smart on terror, and that the White House is only projecting strength, not smarts.` As their strategy, the Bush Administration promotes a plan that stresses a Detention Bill that will come out on Wednesday and an Army Field Handbook on how to question detainees. The manuel will permit three new procedures that interrogators will employ in querying detainees. `Unlawful combatants` e.g. Guantanamo Bay, Cuba prisoners will be subjected to this new scheme. Purportedly, the new plan will team a friendly questioner with a hostile one. The object of the proposal entails persuading the prisoner that his or her questioners come from another nation other than the United States. Currently, the field manuel permits seventeen questioning procedures. This scheme would mainly remain in tact. Traditional prisoners` questioner would use the old battle field questioning techniques. On Monday, Democrats wrote the president requesting a `new direction` for Iraq. It asked for a `phased redeployment of military troops from Iraq. In response, the White House released a reply written by White House Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten that characterized the redeployment idea as `dangerously misguided.`
