White House Pressured For New Prosecutor In a politically contentious move late last year- a United States
Attorney in Arkansas purportedly lost his
job due to circumstances not related to his job responsibilities. David Johnston of the New York Times writes that the then United States Attorney H. E. Cummins III
received his dismissal notice without an explanation. Timothy Griffin holds the title as the interim United States Atorney there. As a part of his past- Mr. Griffin served as a political director for the Republican National Committee and as an aid to Karl Rove- the political consultant to President George Walker Bush. Reports surfaced that Mr. Griffin obtained his job through former White House counsel Ms. Harriet E. Miers. Ms. Miers purportedly asked an assistant to United States Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales for assistance in locating a job for Mr. J. Timothy Griffin. After this event- United States attorney, H.E. Cummins III received a dismissal notice without receiving a reason. Mr. Griffin acted as the interim United States Attorney there. Last week, Paul J. McNulty, the deputy attorney general said that ``Mr. Cummins had done nothing wrong but was removed to make room for Mr. Griffin.`` In the recent past, seven of ten United States attorneys removed, Congressional Democrats assert, occured due to political considerations. Addressing this issue in a news conference- the United States Department of Justice contended that the White House did not act in any other United States Attorney changes. The Justice Department, according to the New York Times ``denied any of the other dismissals,(received any White House attention) suggesting that the Justice Department acted on its own after advising the White House of its desire to get rid of the incumbents.
