President Obama Intends To Craft New
Relations With Cuba
By: Tommy Elder, Jr.
After decades in the United
States` tundra-
President Barack Obama made tentative moves to thaw
relations with Cuba. Bob Davis and Jose De Cordoba of the Wall Street Journal write that President Obama will inform Latin American leaders of his intention to enhance contacts with Cuba. Improving relations with this nation, however, depend on Cuba moving toward a more democratic government first.
Probably, the April 17 Summit of the Americas` in Trinidad`s central topic will revolve around Cuba. Veneguela and some other Latin countries intend to lobby for more cordial ties with Cuba. One supporter of Cuba`s i.e. Venezuela`s President Hugo Chavez will ask the summiters- `Why does Cuba continue to be left out of the Summit of the Americas, if Cuba is a friend of Latin American and Caribbean countries.`
Priority for the Obama administration revolves around improving the world`s monetary condition from its melt down. Representatives of President Obama noted that he would come prepared for dialogue on Cuba should other leaders want to discuss the issue. Further, the president indicated that his preparation for talks over a potential removal of restrictions on travel to Cuba by citizens of the United States for ``non-degree cultural and educational purposes`` will continue. This relaxation would likely greatly increase the flow of tourism from the United States headed toward Cuba.
