Cancer`s Peril Remains Following
Hormone Treatment
By: Tommy Elder, Jr.
Hormone Therapy to treat symptoms of menopause may promote the development of cancer- a recent study suggests- as reported by Robb Stein of the Washington post- an investigation of 15,000 women who utilized hormones as relief for the complication of menopausal difficulties discovered that- ``the chance of developing
Cancer remained
elevated well after (they) quit.``
Following the termination of the use of hormone therapy- the elevated risks of contracting heart attacks, bloold clots, and strokes apparently end when women abandon the use of the drug- the poosible exposure to breast cancer remains however.
According to Stefanick- ``the data appeared to show a real trend even though the breast cancer difference was not statistically significant.`` Other
researchers caution that the
discovery may come from mere chance.
While addressing the study`s findings- Stefanick stated that- `The important message is women really need to make sure they continue getting their mammograms.` The experiments used 15,730 post-menopausal women from age 50 to 79 who injested estrogen and progesterone for an average of 5.6 years. Data interpretation occured for a time period of 2.4 years after the conclusion of the hormone use. The researchers discovered that the likely development of heart disease and blood
clots declined to a stage where it compares to those women who took placeboes. The possibility of a stroke similarly appapently fell, however, that discovery did not show up as an absolute certainty.
Investigators also noted the assistance that came with the use of hormone treatment i.e. a lower risk of colorectal cancer and bone fractures in addition
apparently ``dissipates.``
