Atlanta Officials Mute On Former Mayor`s
Prison Term After
receiving a
thirty months prison
sentence for malfesance in office- former
Atlanta Mayor William (Bill) Campbell awaits the announcement of the place where
he will serve his thirty months of prison time. Bill Torpy of the Atlanta
Journal-Constitution wrote that the various African American leaders in this
city reacted in a muted fashion to the announcement of the sentence handed down
to Mr. Campbell by Federal District Judge Richard Story. As a measure of his
reaction to this event-
Political Scientist and Fulton County State
Representative Bob Holmes (Democrat of Atlanta) stated that `People wory about
political ramifications in their statements` to explain why African American
political officials failed to comment on this situation. He indicazted his shock
that Judge Story commented on ``allegations of corruption that were acquitted at
trial.`` With these admonishing words Federal Judge Story handed down a
thirty-month prison sentence: `As the trial progressed, I was overcome, almost
appalled, by the breadth of misconduct in your administration. I am going to
send you to prison, and I do not take that lightly. Within my heart I am not
sure you have accepted responsibility for what transpired.`
