President Bush and
Attorney General Gonzales Prevented Eavesdropping
Investigation Warrantless wiretapping of United States
Citizens met the approval of President George W. Bush, according to Attorney
Alberto Gonzales. Extracted from an account by Dan Eggen of the Washington Post-
who wrote that- ``President Bush personally blocked an internal investigation
into the role played by Justice Department lawyers in approving a controversial
warrantless eavesdropping
program on calls between the United States and
overseas.`` According to testimony by United States Attorney General Alberto
Gonzales. Starting following the September 11, 2001 attacks on New York City,
New York and Washington, D. C. and provided to the media in December 2005-
detailed a Presidential Directive that permits the National Security Agency to
monitor telephone conversations between the United States and abroad without a
court order. Even the Justice Department`s
Office of Professional Responsibility
could not determine the part played by its attorneys in this scheme because its
investigators could not obtain the appropriate security clearence to review the
documentations. Ironically, the Office of Professional Responsibility`s head Mr.
H. Marshall Jarrett stated that ` a large team of attorneys and agents placed in
a criminal probe of leaks of the NSA program speedily received clearences.
Additionally, he revealed that other probers and dignataries including a civil
liberties board received information on the program. Due to the Office of
Professional Responsibility`s failure to obtain the requested information- Mr.
Jarrett contends that his office `has been precluded from performing its
duties.`
