House Republicans Reveal Internal Dissent Consigned to the minority in the current Session of
Congress- some Republican members of congress demonstrate their independence. Jonathan Weisman of the Washington Post writes that the GOP experienced a split in their ranks in the early voting this term. The legislation that would permit the United States Government to bargain for reduced drug prices for Medicare attracted twenty-four Republican votes. Similarly, the Democratic Bill on Homeland Security swayed sixty-eight Republicans while the authority to increase the minimum wage captured the votes of
eighty-two Republicans. In addressing the new mood among Republicans in Congress- Representative Jo Anne Emerson, Republican of Missouri said- `You`re freer to vote your conscience.` She garnered an eighty-eight
percent voting record from the American Conservative Union in 2005.`` In the current Session of Congress- Representative Emerson backed Democrats on the changed budget rules, Medicare prescription drugs, raising the minimum wage and funding stem cell research. ` Really, I feel free to represent my constituents exactly as they want me to be`, Representative Emerson stated. Reacting to the Democrats rise to power-Congressman Roy Blunt, Republican of Missouri said- `Republican discipline was critically important when we were passing legislation and moving an agenda.` He continued- `The Democrats will soon move from these
issues that poll at eighty, ninety percent to issues that matter.`
