Editor's Notes: In 2004,Shanghai University Press published a five-volume Selected Works of Qian Wei-chang who is President of Shanghai University and Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.The great book,totaled 1230,000 words,contains 175 pieces of important essays and talks about education from 1951 to 2003 and its General Preface makes a good summary of its contents,values and significances: "These articles concentrate expression of his profound insight and persistent practice of the country's scientific education,and his deep thinking and zealous contribution for the social,economic, scientific and cultural developments of the nation and people,many of which are characteristic of forward-looking and principle-guiding.Between the lines are full of his utter devotion to the Chinese Communist Party,his patriotic sprit,his erudition and open heart.These essays and talks,covering philosophy,history,literature,natural science,engineering technologies,regional economy,management science,information theory,educational science,etc.,are worthy of careful studying,especially ones about young people's outlook,values,researches,grown-up and innovation."Qian Wei-chang's work and colorful practice are not only wealth and pride of Shanghai University but also the huge contribution to the whole circles of science and education,even to the great China that is developing rapidly.It is vital to making an approach to his thinking and practice both for getting better achievement of the teaching and researching of Shanghai University,and for useful references and enlightenments for plenty of other educational workers.For these purposes,at the beginning of the New Year,we publish here two recent essays of Qian Wei-chang and other relative articles so as to benefit more people.
