Through half a century's great change and progress,
contemporary Chinese
literature as a
subject has gradually developed from weakness to strongness, becoming influential and well known in the recent twenty years. But, as a new subject still in a developmental
stage, its movement and orientation are full of difficulties, twists and turns, and uncertainties. In this regard, the paper consists of three main parts: The first part expounds China's contemporary literature which, as a new concept, contained strongly political ideology. The literature had a close relation with modern literature, especially the leftwing literature. In terms of space, it was only confined to the Chinese Mainland, given the differences in the social system and geographical conditions. The second part deals with the contemporary literature from the angle of literature itself and through comparative analysis. It presents the features of the developmental stages of the literature with the
nature of the New Era which is different from that of the other subject. The most fundamental feature is that the contemporary literature has been highly politicized and
organized for a considerably long time. In the first stage reality was eulogized and "heretical ideas" were criticized, while the second stage was characterized by being highly organized. The last part focuses on the subject character with goodness or otherwise of contemporary literature and today's complex practice with another way of thinking about the compilation of contemporary literature
history - to stress the "facts" rather than "comments"- and the principles of compiling the said history from the documentary, original and objective perspectives.
