Prolocutors of the Public—from ZHAO Shu-li to ZHANG Ping

Article Summary   by:TsingHua     Original Author: Journal of Teachers College of Shanxi University
ª

Comparing ZHAO Shu-li and ZHANG Ping from literature point of view, they both act conscientiously as public prolocutors. From the subjects in their works, ZHAO Shu-lis works are limited to country life and farmers, whereas ZHANG Pings subjects are much wider in range from country life and farmers (Sky Net), to factories and workers (Choice), from policemen (Ambush) to students (Girl Facing Me). From the point of view of revealing social contradictions, ZHANG Ping is more profound and sharper. From the depiction of characters, ZHAO Shu-li is obviously more experienced, as his characters are mostly vivid, lively and memorable; whereas from those created by ZHANG Ping sighs of simplification and conception can be observed. Form the plots and ways of narration, ZHAO Shu-li pays great attention to the attraction of tales with little psychological and rational analysis, so as to enable readers to read on end; but ZHANG Pings works are just opposite. He often applies to psychological and rational analysis in great length to show clearly his own sensibilities, which is functional in the deepening of the theme, but in the mean time the artistic value of the works is weakened. It is worshipful that both ZHAO Shu-li and ZHANG Ping choose to be the public prolocutors, and they never regret nor retreat in difficulty. In the present social transformation period, China still need writers like ZHAO Shuli and ZHANG Ping.
