When two nominal modifier-head structure phrases are used together to form a sentence, there are two kinds of relations between
them:coordination and subject-predicative.This academic thesis takes the first relations——coordination as the emphasis of the probe and gives deep description on specials of its referential meaning. The peculiarities can be generalized into two points:First,in many cases, unlike the ordinary modifier-head structure, the possessive and determinative meaning can not be derived from the relation between the modifier and the head of each phrases.Second, two nominal phrases are used for the purpose of assertion, not for reference, thus the whole sentence has the advantages of briefness and refinement in the expression. The two parts of this thesis are:l.2.The relations between NP 1 and NP 2.The referential meaning of the whole proverb:① The meaning stressed was literally expressed directly. The modifier A 1 and A 2,which are in the front of the phrases, usually contain the actual meaning.② The actual meaning is not literally expressed, but can be derived and deducted after reading the two phrases.Especially when A 1 and A 2 are nouns denoting person, thing, place and time etc,the meaning of “NP 1+NP 2” is given by the pattern, expressing the idea “the most in a category”.
