Hong Kong literature and mainland China literature have always maintained links over the years, and both sides have exchanged more frequently since mainland China's Reform and opening to the outside world. In this very period, it's even more conspicuous because of an interchange of the both-place novel creations, the readers reception and aesthetic response. The creations and researches of contemporary mainland China's novels have exerted a considerable influence on Hong Kong's literary circles and readership; on the other hand, contemporary Hong Kong's novels, including the Chinese knight-errant and the sentimental fiction, have been gaining ground in the mainland China's readership and critic circle. It is because Hong Kong and mainland China have the same cultural matrix and all kinds of close relations that the both-place novel creations have much in common in such fields as selection of subjects, pure literature, popular literature, writer's state of mind, etc. However, some differences had began to form in the novelist's creations and the reader's reception owing to the different social system and different ways of cultural taste. These similarities and differences are meaningful and thought-provoking. By means of comparative studies, we can more clear-sightedly discover the writing features and the aesthetic viewpoints of the contemporary novels in Hong Kong and mainland China.
