OBJECTIVE To study the effect and mechanisms of the ethanol extracts of Glechoma longituba (Nakai) Kupr (EGLK) on the small intestine propulsive function in mice,
diarrhea models induced by the water extracts of
rhubarb and
neostigmine methylsulfate and the
isolated ileum smooth muscle movement. METHODS The experiment method of intestine propulsion of carbon ink in mice, diarrhea model induced by the water extracts of rhubarb and neostigmine methylsulfate and the experiment method of isolated ileum smooth muscle of guinea pig were used in the experiments. RESULTS The intestinal propelling movement of carbon ink and experimental diarrhea caused by the water extracts of rhubarb and neostigmine methylsulfate in mice could be markedly antagonized by EGLK. The spontaneous movements of isolated intestinal smooth muscle in guinea pig could be suppressed. The excitation induced by acetylcholine, histamine and BaCL 2 could be also antagonized.CONCLUSIONS EGLK has the inhibition effect on intestine peristalsis which may be mediated through cholinoceptor and histamine
receptor or directly acts on the cells of ileum smooth muscle.
