A Dream of Red Mansions has two interlacing structures. One is the bottom-up fatalistic structure which dominates the plot
development and the fate of the main characters. The other is the top-down realistic structure which gives a detailed description of the plot and characters. The composition and function of realistic structure have two main layers which are interrelated and interact as both cause and effect. The character relation structure is centered upon Jia Baoyu which looks like a planetary model of atomic structure. The status of the characters in the novel is determined by their relation with Baoyu and the
relationship between people is fixed. However, the plot structure reveals the change of
Relationship between people which subsequently facilitates the evolving of the plot, the backbone of which is three main interrelated plot clues with the process of their evolving forms several big plot units. And every plot clue and plot unit undergoes occurrence, development, climax and ending with mutually formed relationship of interweaving, inter-conducive and interdependent, further facilitating the whole plot of the novel into its fatalistic ending by taking on a look of a successive range of mounts chasing one another.
