On the detachment of "Bei"-marked passive sentences from "Jiao\Rang"-marked ones in Chinese pedagogi

Article Summary by: TsingHua

Original Author: Teaching and Research on Chinese as a Foreign Language
This paper analyses the semantic features of Chinese words ‘BEI\JIAO\RANG’. The frequency of passive sentences with markers
‘BEI\JIAO\RANG’ are investigated as well as the respective frequency of RANG as a causative verb and RANG as a passive marker. It is found that passive sentences marked by BEI are much more frequently used than those marked by JIAO\RANG,and the frequency of causative verb RANG is also higher than passive RANG. With regard to CFL learners’ aquisitional route,we suggest that passive sentences with marker BEI should be detached from those marked by JIAO\RANG in Chinese pedagogic grammar, which means passive sentences with marker BEI as the typical form of passive sentence should be taught at the elementary stage, and passive sentences with markers JIAO\RANG can be introduced at the intermediate stage. Thus the cognitive difficulty of learning passive sentences could be lowered as a resutlt of reduced intralingual interference. Hopefully this kind of approach will facilitate the learning process of Chinese passive sentences for the CFL learners.
