This paper opines that the basis for the new cultural and literary movements during the May 4th Movement has so far been
purified to some extent, its inherent abundance and complexity having been lost. Starting with an analysis of similarities and dissimilarities between Cai Yuanpei and
Peking University initiated by Cai and Chen Duxiu and the magazine"New Youth"founded by Chen as well as of similarities and differences between Zhang Taiyan's disciples and other scholars at Peking University and"New Youth", this paper aims to expound on the confrontation and contention between the"S Guild Hall"with Lu Xun at the core and Peking University integrating Cai Yuanpei's and Chen Duxiu's ideas. It is believed that two cognitive frameworks are essential to reinterpreting the advent of the new cultural and literary movements during the May 4th Movement, the first being the "balance between the"S Guild Hall"with Lu Xun at the core and Peking University; the other being"the tripartite tension"exhibited by the guild hall itself. It is clear that Zhang Taiyan and Lu Xun have played vital roles in the new cultural and literary movements during the May 4th Movement.
