Language Identity and Status of Taiwan's Newly Established "National Language

Article Summary by: TsingHua

Original Author: Journal of Xiamen University
Since the beginning of 2003, two great changes have taken place in the language policy of Taiwan. Its "Educational Bureau"
have discussed over the issue of " Language Development Rule" (Draft) and abolished " National Language Popularization Policy. This action has violated the social and historical ethics and failed to conform to the needs of Taiwan compatriots. The author of this paper tries to analyze the differences of language pedigree category, language etymology relations, practical language use and language variability to prove their different identities. Moreover, three more aspects also demonstrate their different language positions.1.Equal status of languages does not mean that all languages and dialects are contact vernaculars. 2. The position of contact vernacular is established via historical selection. 3. The evidence for national language should be contact vernacular. As a result the 14 "National Languages" that have been newly established in Taiwan are actually entitled to enjoy different language identities and status .The place of the "National Language", Mandarin, is indispensable.
