Teditional Chinese poetic theory has always had a conservative tendency towards returning to the ancients and sticking to
established rules, namely, standing in awe of the
authority of the ancients, and laying stress on following the teaching of old masters with the result that they never dared to express their own genuine feelings. The rise of the Chan sect brought new revelations to Chinese poetic theory.Ihfluenced by this sect's insistence on the doctrine hot temperament of being true to one's own ego andon its principle of relying on one's own efforts for salvation in practicing Taoism, and by its behavioralstyle of defying authority and rules to heldly give play to the dynamic role of the subject, Chinese poetics made outstanding achievements in
breaking through and transcending; traditional conservatism by refusingto return to the ancients, rebelling against dogmas and breaking through the bondage of norms, so as toachieve artistic individuality and develop the autonomy and creativity of the subject.
