“Xing”(Enlightening And Infecting) in “Six Rules (Yi)”, there have been continuous arguments. But whether these understandings
are right or wrong, a full scale or complete system of poetics is well formed, which can be called “Xing”. “Xing” means: first, the desire to write poems arises from feelings about certain matters; second, poems are written to express one's ideal; third, poems seek the true love; fourth, poems should avoid an ornate style; fifth, poems should be figurative and vivid; sixth, poems should be based on the principles of creating artistic conceptions; seventh, poems should pursue connotations; eighth, there should be an exalted, poetic mood; ninth, the way of beginning a poem should be paid attention to; tenth, symbolic means should be emphasized; eleventh, the aesthetic value is achieved through “Xing”; twelfth, the functions of inspiring ideals should be considered; thirteenth, poems can be taught by way of elicitation. This is an unexpected, yet delightful harvest. What is more wonderful is that such a large system can be linked up by one "Xing". On the matter of fact, “Xing” is understood in so many ways because its ideographic functions have been developed and enriched with the development of the society and poetry.
