Qin Guan was the victim of the
struggles between the old and new parties in the Northern Song Dynasty. He had great learning
and was very famous then, but was born under an unworthy ruler, and suffered many a setback during his life. At first, in order to find some means of livelihood and to obey his parents' Order, he went out again and again to take the imperial
examinations until he was chosen a successful candidate in the highest imperial examinations at the age of 37. Later he went to the capital to follow his official career when greying at the temples, he made, early or late, officials in lower position, such as the doctor of the Imperial College(in feudal China) and the editor of the state History College. Having been slandered and pushed out for the
struggles of the parties and relegated for times, he felt heavyhearted and ended his life earlier. His life was fragile. Historical fairness should be given back to such a gifted and aspirant patriotic intellectual like him. His experience was well recorded in the history as an outstanding personage who had a lifetime of frustrations in that tragic times. This was not only his own tragedy, but the tragedy of that age and that society.
