This paper diachronically examines the concrete expression mode and its characteristics in the influence of the literary thinking trend of romanticism on modern Chinese novels' It holds that the absorption of romantic literature by authors of the May 4 Movement involves four aspects: 1. The violent resistant spirit characterized of the Movement. 2. Its tone of pathos, melancholy,and aloneness; 3. The acception of the view about nature of romanticism; 4. The legendary feature of romanticism. The influence of romanticism. The influence of romanticism on arts is mainly shown in laying emphasis of giving expression to passion and in laying emphasis of self-expression,and in style the influence leads to giving birth to the trend of prosification and poetization in modern literature. In 1930s in modern Chinese novels, the individual lyric novel,the pastoral lyric novel,and the romantic legendary novel all had a new development. In 1940s the novels in the later period of the romantic school represented by Xu Su and one anonymous author may be regarded as the last repercussions in the modern Chinese novel.
