Article Summary   by:TsingHua     Original Author: Journal of Hanshan Teachers College
ª

The characteristics of hieroglyphic and meaningful Chinese characters and the wealth of information they conveyed made the written forms of Old Chinese comparatively concise in vocabulary and sentence patterns as well. The unique linguistic patterns of Chinese classical poetry, formed on the basis of this, confined ancient poets'freedom in narration, description, and expression of their emotions.Metaphor, with its vivid imagination, has prolonged the aesthetic distance between the media objects and the inner quality in it,and increased the aesthetic appreciation, thus it has created a graceful scene in which emotions and scenery are blended together.Metaphor fully embodies the essential characteristics of the art of poetry and its abilities to express.Furthermore, metaphor is also a reflection of the Han nationality's abstract and concrete, instinct, and its whole mode of thinking on Chinese language and culture. The characteristics of metaphor, therefore, are particularly prominent and are extensively used in Chinese classical poetry.
