After the Jing Dynasty was destroyed, its
adherents,especially the
intellectuals, had five choices about their life. That is
to become an official of the new dynasty, get asylum from the warlords, retire into the country or mountain forest, become a Taoist priest,or to head towards the Song Dynasty in South China. But these
intellectuals all kept in contact with the new Yuan Dynasty. They had not refused the Yuan Dynasty entirely. They all had psychological ambiguity. On the one hand, they preserved the traditions that exhort them not to be an official of Yuan Dynasty;on the other hand, they could not be hostile to Yuan and could not refuse associations with new influential officials.Their attitude towards Jing's collapse and themselves became more realistic rather than historical. In their works, they often just sighed with sadness, but no longer expressed their mental pain. They recalled and wrote the history of Jing Dynasty, while accepting the new dynasty. The difference between the Han and other nationalities were no longer the cause of their mental pain.
