A DRAMA THAT IS NEAR TO THE REALITY

The Sanskrit drama ‘MATTA VILAS PRAHASAN’ written by bhodhayana on common understanding that the basic amenities like food and human relation would be interestingly assopciated with any person and any religion, was played by ‘natakamane’ theater team on 10-03-2007 at gubbi veeranna kalakshetra, Tumkur to the enthusiastic audience who had gathered in good numbers and made them to ponder over the theme of play.
The main point of the play which opens with the association of the people of all the three religions like Shaiva, Buddha and Brahmana, is that it encompasses the nature of human beings minutely. The kaapalika who looses his kapaala (the skull which is used as begging bowl) in an inebriated mental situation, when he and his fiancé (Devsomi) were in compromising mood, suddenly comes to know the reality of loosing the kapaala and repents; makes a futole search with the Boudha Bhikshu and Pashupatha (Brahmana); and ultimately finds that it was in possession of a mentally wreck. Thus effort is made to show that whoever may be the person, the basic necessities, desires and liking would remain the same- the play which runs at this stage becomes everlasting and contemporary.

Melehalli Devaraju, the director of the play, adopted the story to the stage with a particular message to be sent across the audiences, had invested his entire inner capabilities to keep the theme of the play intact, is an appreciable point. He has made an homogeneous mixing of the authentic folk song with Janapad vadya sammala( that is used in Veergase dance steps). It is satisfactory fact that this format has helped in keeping the inner feelings of human being open. The play which disrobes the life of a particular era of our country(6-7AD), is historically too becomes important. For the same reason, the efforts of the director to capture the reality of life of common man through the character of the mad person has come out naturally and for the same reason the presentation of the play became contemporary. Still, on the whole, it is felt that some more rehearsals were necessary to attain perfection of the play.

The Sanskrit-kannada translation expert Dr.J.Srinivas Murthy has rightly used the lovely language. Asha as Shaiva kapaalika, Radha as his fiancé, Raghu as Boudha Bhikshu and Anil Kumar as Pashupatha religion person, Umesh as Sootradaar and mad man, and Ambujakshi as an actress have done justice to their respective characters. The background music by U.Govind Gowda(paying of sammala) was supplementing the play. Dress designing, make up, lighting were appealing. Let this stage show held with stewardship of Natakmane Mahalingu,
shall mature further and get repeated performances.
