Chinese Characters in Stone Scripture of Tripitaka and Arrangement of Variant Appearances

Article Summary by: TsingHua

Original Author: Journal of Beijing Normal University(Social Sciences)
This abstract was translated from 石刻佛经文字研究与异体字整理问题
This paper is a partial report of the several years' studies of the Chinese characters in the Tripitaka of stone scripture
in Bi Yun Temple at Beijing Fangshan County. It accounts for the multiple variant appearances of the same characters in three respects: their storage in computer, their arrangement and their standardization. The author proposes that these three respects are distinctive and belong to different levels. It suggests that reference books should be careful in selecting the variant appearances of the like characters;and the storage that provides data for studies should better consider the appearances that have a compatibility nature.Yet "incorrect character" is a concept from the angle of standardization, and the arrangement should not be casual in calling a character wrong because that may overlook the changing or variation process. The paper also explicates the concepts of "hetero-structure" and "alternative spelling",and the issue of "like characters" and "different characters".
