A "Literary Creation" column" was set up in the 8th section of the 13th volume in the reformed Novels Monthly under the editorship
of Shen Yan-bing,who was well aware of the immaturity of the then critical circles, and did not set a high demand on or expectation for the column. When
Zheng Zhen-duo became the editor-in-chief of the periodical in 1923,he replaced the "Literary Creation" column with a "Thoughts on Reading" column in the 1st section of the 14th volume, and he even cancelled off the "Thoughts on Reading" column running from the 15th volume onwards;as a matter of fact he did not harbor a good prospect for the two columns in that in the opinion of Zheng,a collegiate scholar, critique of this kind could merely be considered as readers' views.Despite their similar attitudes towards the critique column, the two editors-in-chief differed markedly in their respective administration of the periodical in that Shen Yan-bing was tolerant of and compassionate towards readers, thus having swiftly expanded the impact of reader criticism while Zheng Zhen-duo was meticulous and precise in his work, thereby having equipped the periodical with academic connotation and value and upgraded
modern literary criticism theoretically.
