On the Translation of Buddhist Scripture and the Development of the Chinese Terasyllabic Words

This abstract was translated from 佛经翻译与汉语四字格的发展
The translation of the Buddhist scriptures not only employed but also activated the long-existing patterns of the Chinese
terasyllabic words, which greatly enforced the ability of word-formation for Chinese characters and also developed the Chinese terasyllabic words directly or indirectly.Firstly, the translation of Buddhist scriptures has been considered the main element which led to the double-syllable tendency of Chinese words, and also made the patterns of word-formation more perfect.Secondly, the employment of the new style and terasyllabic words for the translation of Buddhist scriptures also resulted in the special form:2+2 rhythm pattern.Thirdly, the oralized trends of the translation of the Buddhist scriptures have imposed great impacts on various kinds of colloquial literature styles, and also highly related to the terasyllabic words in the colloquial novels. At last, the terasyllabic idioms from the Buddhist scriptures have occupied the largest proportion of borrowed-idioms in the Chinese history, which have also been mixed into Chinese and became one of the main elements of Chinese.
