On the Significance of Poetic History in Zhao Zhixin's Poetics

Article Summary by: TsingHua

Original Author: Journal of Shandong Normal University(Social Science Edition)
During the reign of Emperor Kangxi of the Qing Dynasty, while Wang Yuyang presided over the arena of poetry writing, and,
under the patronization of the imperial power, the divinely romantic poetry(Shenyun Shi) swept across the whole empire, only Zhao Zhixin voiced a controversial claim in his Notes on Talking about the Dragon, with a far-reaching significance left behind. And this is one of the "legal cases on the arena of poetry" at the beginning of the Qing Dynasty. Despite of the fact that he was out of office, Zhao still contended with the ministers and other high ranking officials. Though he failed to shake Wang's position, yet his doctrine on poetics and creative writings played a disharmonious note, and thus became a transitional representative, bridge and medium for the poetry of the Qing Dynasty to enter its intermediary stage from its initial stage, and meantime paved the way for the transformation of the Qing Dynasty poetry brought about by Yuan Mei under the reign of Emperor Qianlong and other modern Chinese poets as Gong Zizhen, Hang Zunxian, etc.thus bearing the significance of poetic history.
