Its been raining joy in the country, as far as
sports go. First it was the National football
team winning the prestigious Nehru cup. That was followed by the Indian
hockey team's victory and then of course the much hyped Twenty20 cricket world cup, which India won in great style. All of this coincided with the runaway success of "
chak de ", a
film starring the dazzling Shahrukh khan playing a disgraced hockey player seeking redemption by coaching the womens hockey team. The film was released way before any of the aforementioned successes. Indians are all about emotion. We are all about sentiment. We believe that our
lord Hanuman could move a mountain out of sheer devotion for his lord Rama. We believe that Lord Krishna could lift a mountain by his index finger. Our mythology is all about love and devotion. So whenever India Scored a Goal in a hockey match, or took a wicket in a cricket match, the stadium was resounded with the popular title track of "Chak De India". It was great at first, but soon you hoped that India didn't score a goal, or take a wicket so that you didn't have to hear that
song again. The repetition gets to one. But the fact remains that the intention of playing the song was to keep the players spirits high, to keep them going. And It worked. There has never been a movie based solely on sports and the magic of pushing yourself that extra mile to beat the crowd. Chak De was the drug Indian Sportsmen needed. They needed to feel wanted, feel special. Chak De gave them all that. One wonders, however, how long this might go on for? Are we going to keep pushing our sporstmen with the chak De, or will the Indian Film makers come out with another Sports based film? Surely we are going to run out of patience with the chak de song, which seems to be attaining nothing short of the national anthem status at present. Time alone can tell.
