This story is about a girl who lived all alone in an island for so many years. This story was given life by the famous Scott O’Dell in his famous novel, The Island of the Blue Dolphin. The novel was actually a historical fiction. This means that this novel was actually based on a historical event. History comes in: the island of the blue dolphin was actually the island along the California coast named, La Island de san Nicolas. It was named after the Patron saint of sailors, travelers and merchants. It was Sebastian Vizcaino who actually discovered it in search of an island where treasure galleons from the Philippines could find shelter. In searching for the island he can use for the galleons, he decided to go north of the globe, going to the California coast. There he saw an island, which got his taste. He set his boat and went to the island. The girl in the novel lived in the island from 1835 – 1853. And she became known to history as The Lost woman of san Nicolas. The real thing about this girl was actually few. It was fr. Gonzales who befriended her after she was rescued by the white ma. The girl was found in the island, wearing grass skirt and living in a small hut.
Her story was so sad. She told the Fr. Gonzales that the wolves killed her brother. The woman of san Nicolas spoke to fr. Gonzales only by the use of sign language. But then fr. Gonzales was able to understand what she was trying to say. The woman of san Nicolas was now buried on a hill near the Santa Barbara Mission. Her Skirt was now in Rome. San Nicolas is anymore an island hidden in the sea. It is now the secret naval base of the United States. The story of the Island and the woman who lived there all alone is truly remarkable and will always be remembered by the reader of Scott O’Dell’s novel, Island of the Blue Dolphin. A mystery it is…but the story of the woman of san Nicolas will always serve as a lesson for us. How she survive in the island for many years is the best story for me… I recommend to everyone who is now reading this blog to read the novel entitled The island of Blue Dolphin….and you will know the adventures this girl has went trough..
