Education through the
physical emphasizes the acquisition not only of physical skills and bodily
development,
but also the nurturing of emotional, intellectual, and social
skills. In short, a well- balanced individual with healthy mind and healthy
body is developed in the process.
With
the increased awareness of the importance of an active lifestyle, sports
activity is seen as laying the foundations in young people for long-term health
and improved quality of life. It is indeed motivating and encouraging to note
that many educators, administrators, policy-makers, and activity providers view
physical education and sports activity as integral part of a student’s total
development.
Indeed, we all love
winners. Given the chance, we all would like to become champions, and be
victorious. But competitions such as
this are not designed that way. There will always be winners, just as there
will be losers. One may not bring home the Championship trophy, nor add to the
collection of medals. Medals get tarnished, and trophies lose their luster but
not the wisdom and experience that one
gains from sports
competition or undertaking. Those treasures are more
important than bronze, silver, or gold.
