This is in reference to your cover story “Indiakke
aavashiyamo oru Rashtrapati?” (
The Sunday Iindian Malayalam edition), of course at the present scenario it is a good question worth thinking. This ceremonial but highest post in the Indian democracy is the talk of the hour. It is a sad and naked fact that the largest democracy’s supreme commander is only a rubber stamp. Why then we need to waste such a lot of money energy and time for this futile exercise. The dare need of a president arises only when there is a constitutional crises. Even in such
situation that can be definitely be tackled by exercising the authority of the Supreme Judiciary of
India. If at all we need this ceremonial post the present system of selecting the president should be reviewed and along with the
elected representatives all the citizens of India (eligible
voters) should also get a chance to vote their opinion. These days the elected representatives neglect the valuable voters’ ones they get elected and change steps according to their whims and fancies and indulge even in horse trading. People’s voices make a big difference in such situation. Think tanks of India should find a solution to this calamity as early as possible before it damages the whole system.
