Rahul Dev’s ‘Rear window column (The Sunday Indian News Weekly), made
interesting and serious reading. The writer rightly says that after 25 years Hindi will become the language of the poor. The growing tendency among the people of India shows that, but one should move along with the time and speed otherwise he will lag behind. In the past we have seen many especially the politicians showed an allergy to English and created confusion among the people and they send their children to the renowned English medium schools. Now the scene is totally changed and few come out openly in support of English. No doubt English is universally accepted as an international language. Most of the needed information in the field of science and technology, art and literature are mainly available in English. Countries like China, Japan and Soviet Union give importance to English and are making rapid headway in science and technology. These counties are aware of the realities of the time and understand that English is mandatory to achieve progress. To achieve progress in any field, English is a must. Instead of wasting time energy and money on hare-brained and ill-conceived ideas like endorsing Hindi or any other regional language in the place of English, the country needs an approach where the emphasis is on quality, only then can we progress and survive as a nation.
