CHARACTERS OF THE BICOLANO
The traits of the Bicolano are a by-product of various foreign and domestic regional influences that have been assimilated into his indigenous culture in the course of his history. As it is difficult if not impossible to define what a Bicolano is,all that can be done is to sort out some distinctive behavioral patterns which are dominant through out the history and up to the present.
The ordinary Bikolano is deeply religious. The religousity itself is an interesting phenomenon.Although the region is preodominantly a Christian where the majority embrace the Catholic faith, its characterestics discomforts towards institutions and authority resulted in the flowering peculiar expressions of their faith. The numerous religious traditions preserved and still precticed in various towns which bears different elements of pre-Spanish indigenous religion attest to the enduring espirit of Bicolano religiosity. The most distinctive and visible evidence of their faith is exemplified in their devotion to the Lady of Peñafrancia,Patroness of Bicolandia whom every Bicolano affectionately regards as his celestial mother and intimately addresses as "ina".
Such relogiosity, perhaps, explains thr Bicolanos attitude towards natural calamities.Bikolanos have patiently suffered the ravages of natural calamities such as typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. These three are regular destructive visitors of the region. Not only do they patiently suffered in these but even find in them spiritual significance.
Another patent expression of a distinctive Bicolano trait is his extreme personalism. For him there is no separation between an objective task and emotional involvement. He is generally inclined to give personal interpretations to actions as he take things personally. Thus he is easily affected ven by an objective critical remark for he take it as direct assault to his personality.
Extreme personalism render him uncomfortable with formalities. This perhaps expalains why Bicolanos are family-centered as it is in his family that he can be himself. This also explains why he feels uncomfortable with institutions and with rules and regulations prescribing standard behavior and procedures.
Side by side with his extreme personalism is his pragmatic approach to intellectual life.An average educated Bicolano is one who mostly prefer to engage in a lively discussion of pragmatic issues such as political and personal gossip than spend his time in a silent and withdrawn world o contemplation of abstract ideas an academic facts.Scholarly, intellectual and scientific dispositions are generally aliens to the minds of many Bicolanos as they are not derectly involved with persons.Hence,it is not surprising that most young Bicolano are attrected to the legal proffession, priesthood or to the media. The increasing interest in technical and scientiic courses is due more to their greater financial prospects.
Another significant trait of a Bicolano is his sociability and warm frienship.Bikolanos are rated best in friendliness. This sociability is manifested during social celebrations and local fiestas. His tyical way of socialization is thru drinking. It is because in drinking that discussions and camaraderie are established with lesser inhibitions and formality. This earned them the repute of being hospitable. Two essentials of this trait areworth mentioning.Thay possess charming qualities of sense of humors and pleasant disposition.Oftentimes a Bicolano expresses his love or hatred in playful, cynical,or disrespectful way.
Affected by a personalistic attitude, they are not generally enterprising and business-minded.Since the Spanish times only very few have seriously ventured into large scale bussiness. The region was always dominate by foreign investors, particularly Chinese. It is observed that anybody who attempts to put up a business should first established personal relationships before any other relationship can be achieved.Personal contacts are generally involved in every transactions and these are generally difficult to turn down.Preference is usually given to a family or to a friends in hiring, delevery or service and even in voting.Hence, one who engages in bussiness should be prepared to forego his bussiness or forego his friend.
Such is the sketchy profile of the Bicolanos.
