The middle class writes Fairchild in a dictionary of
sociology “is a social class resting between the
aristocracy and the proletariat on the social level”. But I feel that no definitions can ever pin-point the accurate meaning of the middle class, nor is it a stable section of people. Through times the definition of the middle class has changed. Yet we all use term freely and perhaps, in the context of the current period, can say what the middle class is.
Today in India, the middle class comprises the Government employees of class III and II categories, other wage earners of the same level in private sectors and the not-too-well-off farmers and
tradesmen. This middle class, the backbone of any nation. The middle class also contains the groups of intellectuals, of writers, thinkers and
philosophers. So when the standard of middle class falls the nation crumbles. Hence it should be the Endeavour of all to ensure that the standard of living of a country’s middle class keeps on rising not falling.
