The Egg and the Sperm: How Science Has Constructed a Romance Based on
The egg and the sperm is an article that examines the masculine and feminine traits identified with the male sperm and
and female egg. The article essentially examines the different aspects of how the female reproductive organs and specifically the egg is marginalized in the explanation and imagery of the reproduction. The article examines how emphases is placed on the males sperm and makes it evident that sperm within modern and historical context is given priority and emphases in the reproduction process.
The article examines three different studies that indicate the the female egg plays a larger role then its male counterpart (the sperm) and its vital importance in that it is far more valuable considering the ration of sperm to egg, however the findings of the article continued to place an emphasis on the importance of the sperm and create an image of the egg as playing either a passive role or the role of the femme fetal in the reproduction (fertilization) process.
