Nouthetic counselors have always been keenly aware of the importance of
medical issues as they have counseled. They regularly study and teach about the relationship
counseling must have with genuine medical science. However, just because someone says something is medical science does not mean that it truly is. Today many behaviors are being blamed on genetics with no proof that this is so.
genetic disorders are classified into three categories. 1. Single gene disorders that cause diseases like Cystic Fibrosis have been clearly proven. 2. The deletion or addition of segments of
genes on chromosomes produces conditions such as Down’s Syndrome. These first two are proven in laboratory studies. 3. Multi-factorial disorders are categorized under “genetics,” but have not been proved like the others. “Genetic Predisposition” is one of the most common terms associated with this. The claim is that a person’s genetic makeup causes him to be predisposed for an illness or behavior. Psychiatric diagnoses such as depression, eating disorders, alcoholism, panic attacks, etc. are being blamed on genetic disposition. It is important to distinguish between conditions that are familial and those that are genetic. Many factors can explain the familial conditions. Role modeling and learned sinful behavior are also equally plausible explanations. A careful reading of quotes from medical science shows that these behaviors are not genetic. A major problem with blaming behavior on genetics is that it robs a person of hope. If it is genetics there is no hope of escape, and he has to just live with it. The
Bible tells us that God forgives and changes those who come to Him and do what the Bible says. The Nouthetic counselor is able to guide the person through the Bible to being a new, changed person. This is hope. You don’t have to be trapped into believing “it is all in my genes.” http://nanc.org/editor/filemanager/upload/asp/UserDocs/08
