The Coral Reef's Crisis

Book Summary by: Isaigh

Original Author: Rita Upadhyay
For million of years, busy communities of ocean creatures live together in brightly colored structures called coral reefs.
But this beautiful underwater cities are in danger. Because of pollutions, and careless human behavior. That will put thousands of kinds of sea creatures at risk of extinction. A Coral looks like a rock when it is actually made up of tiny clear animals called Coral Polyps. Millions of them stick together in colonies and form a hard shell. They make big reefs when colonies grow together. The bright color of the corals came from algae which lived within the coral. Algae are tiny sea plants. Corals and algae depends on each other in order for them to live. This is called Symbiosis. Pollution has hurt many coral reefs. Bad fishing methods like using dynamites have also caused terrible harm. But the biggest threat is that oceans are getting warmer. The warm water causes to loose the algae that supply its food and color. Scientists call this deadly process the Coral Bleaching. But We Can still do something for our corals if we only work together and avoid throwing garbage and chemical waste in the ocean.
