THE GREAT POET
----------Rabindranath Tagore “VIswakavi” the World poet born on May 9, 1861 in Bengal to Maharini Devendranath Tagore and Sarda devi. His father was a rich man and an aristocrat. He was the eigth son and fourteenth son of his parents.
He was not sent to any school, he was educated at home only. He was not happy for that, and he felt that nature is a mystery and he should unravel the secrets of nature through education. He had a special method of studying—getting up early, some physical training and after that Maths, History, Geography, Bengali and Sanskrit. On Sundays, he conducted scientific experiments. Reading
plays was a special interest to him. He read plays of Kalidas and Shakespeare.
For further studies he was sent to London where he met Professor Henry Morley whose literature influenced him. While studying in England he
wrote a poem “Broken Heart”. He returned to India soon without taking any degree. He started writing Bengali poems. His poem “sandhya geet” (song of the duck) was appreciated by all. He wrote a number of devotional songs in Bengali.
“Gitanjali” is one of his best works for which he was awarded the noble prize in 1913. He was the first Indian to receive a noble prize and got the title of “sir”. He also played an important role during the freedom struggle of India. He also refused to accept the title of “sir”. He also wrote a number of plays like—post office, Nater puja, etc., He was also a great artist.
He was a great Philospher, and teacher. He took his last breath on august 7, 1941, Leaving his thoughts and ideas for all to follow.
