Research in Economics has always been tuned to the needs of the society. During the first decade of the 21st century- important issues and questions related to the role of females in the economy were observed, and,
Research within this area has been rather extensive. This has concerned, for instance, topics related to the division of
market and non-market work between the genders, feminization of
labour, differences in wages between the genders, and the structure of the economic
policy from a
gender perspective. These are important social issues apart from being economic concerns.
Most of the research in labour economics in recent years has followed the segmentation
approach. The best known model under this approach is the Dual Labour Market Theory.
Research in labour economics not only identifies the existence of dichotomy and gender discrimination in the labour market but also measures its extent and suggests policy prescriptions to deal with it.
There is need for intervention in the labour market to promote the interests of marginal
workers – i.e. female workers. A rational policy for effective transformation of society through research would be to enable women to access better education & training and to provide services such as child care facilities which can improve women’s participation in the labour market.
