Homosexuality, a matter of personal choice Gay men and lesbians have been ostracized by the society so far and homo sexuality branded sacrilegious in the Judeo- Christian world. Thousands have suffered for their homosexual orientation. It was a taboo until 1948 when Alfred Kinsey published his remarkable book about human sexuality. He pointed out that homo sexual inclinations might not be abnormal or unnatural. Until then it was brutally suppressed even in the free societies. Gay men and lesbians were eliminated from all government departments in the United States. State and federal authorities used to simply ban homosexuals. Those who engaged in overt actions of perversion were considered to lack the emotional stability of normal people. All public references to gays and lesbians have been negative. All the homo-sexual and sodomites have been condemned by even God himself. Most of the countries considered homo-sexuality a crime and had laws to punish the offenders. And if one was a gay he had to hide his nature. The most the gays could expect from the society was sympathy for their ‘illness’. Many even propagated that it was an incurable disease. The homosexuals suffered silently. Until recently, even the renowned psychiatrists maintained that the exclusive homosexual was a psychopath. The Orientals have been more liberal and tolerant. It had been accepted in the Chinese and Islamic societies. Emperors from the Han Dynasty had male favorites. It is not considered sinful in the Buddhist and Taoist scriptures. According to a survey in China in 1992 by Din Dalin, a famous sexologist, about 3 million Chinese revealed that they had some sort of homosexual experiences. But in the Christian world, thousands of homosexuals were imprisoned, tortured, or even put to death.
Millions went through mental agony due tot condemnation of homosexuality by the society Recent surveys show that at least one in three of all Americans had at least one homo-sexual experience after puberty. Many suppressed their natural inclinations due to the moral turpitude of the society. It took centuries for this pernicious notion to be challenged and disproved. It is now accepted that homosexuality is not sickness or any mental aberration. It is only an orientation or propensity at par with heterosexuality. Today homosexuals lead normal lives in their homes with their partners. Many man to man and woman to woman relationships are happy and peaceful. There are gay games which attract thousands and thousands of participants. There are figure skating competitions featuring same sex pairs with a variety of dances. The emancipation has come mainly in America and Europe. But there are many societies which brand homo-sexuality to be abnormal and deserving to be discarded. It is a mortal sin for the Catholics deserving eternal fire. But the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Hanover, Germany, had even allowed homosexuals to serve as members of the clergy. The removal of an active homosexual from the active clerical duties had crated a lot of controversy. Homosexuality is not a disease or an aberration. It should be seen just like the heterosexual behavior. Homo-sexuality should simply become a question of personal choice and life style. .
