The Blanket ( continued)
Act one
Scene two
(It is a fine March-night. A calender is hanging against the
wall in the yard outside the house. It marks the year 2010. Here an old man and his grandson are sitting under the moon)
Grandfather: ( talks softly like a little boy): Isn''t this a fine blanket my son has given me? ( He smoothes the blanket over his knees). And isn''t your father a nice man to be given a blanket like this to go away with? Look at the wool in it!....and warm will it be these cold winter nights to come. There will be no other blanket like it up there......
Ali ( sighs): You are just trying to make it easier for me not to object to your leaving us. Whenver Dad and mom talk about your going away, you will say it''s your idea to go.
Grandfather: Don''t cry dear one! You are not the kind to cry easily. You are too old for that!
Ali ( stands up): Imagine....! Leaving a house to go to that building..., that government house where you would be with so many other isolated aging men and women? No! It is past belief!
Grandfather: ( plays with the harmonica): It''s a poor tune, isn''t it, except to be dancing to. (Silence). It''s, hum, a fine and interesting lady your father has married. Getting married to a woman like this! She must be making him feel young again!
Ali: Yes! A perfect example of an upper class ways. She is the sort to master the art of making you feel you are wearing the wrong type of shoes.., you know?...knowledge is a sealed envelop
Grandfather: You know, it''s my idea to go. What would an old fellow like me do around the house?...Getting in the way, an old fool like me. Babies will come and I would not be aroundlistening to them cry all the time....Now listen to this! A sad tune for a night like this
