The old Malay Language was not only spoken in the time of Sriwijaya Kingdom. The same language was used in the epigraph from
the year of 832 AD found in Middle Java (Gandasuli) and in the epigraph from the year of 942 AD found in Bogor. At the time of Sriwijaya Kingdom, the language was used as a culture language, found in many religious books of Buddha. The old Malay language had also functioned as a
communication language among tribes in the
motherland and to the traders came from outside of the land.Indonesian Language grew and developed from the Malay Language which has been used as a communication language (lingua franca) not only in the islands of Motherland but also in most of East Asia. There was a time in a youth gathering, all young men from all islands made a pledge: 1. One motherland, Indonesia 2. One nation, Indonesia, and 3. Upholding one union language, Indonesian Language. Those three pledges are well-known as ''Youth Pledge". Malay Language was easily accepted as a communication language among islands, tribes, traders, nations, and kingdoms because the language has no strata. Malay Language was widely spoken throughout the Motherland and grew stronger through times. Malay Language which was used in some regions in Motherland has been influenced by its traditional culture. Malay Language took some words from other languages such as Sanskrit, Persian, Arabic, and other European languages.The Indonesian Youth, joined in movement organization, had planned to uphold Malay Language to be Indonesian Language that may become a union language for all Indonesians (Youth Pledge, October 28, 1928).The National Awakening had significantly supported the growth of Indonesian Language. The role of political activities, trades, and mass media was so big in making Indonesian Language famous. The Independence Proclamation of Republic of Indonesia, August 17, 1945, had nailed the position and function of Indonesian Language as national language. Now days, Indonesian Language is spoken by all levels of society in Indonesia.
