There have many stories of primary school girls being molested by their
teachers and even principals! The
teacher or principal will call them for extra class or tuition and when they come to study they are subjected to all sorts sexual molestations. This happen in every state of our country. There was a similar story from an English medium school near Bombay recently.
The most recent one was coming from Gujarat. An 18 year old low cast girl training to be a school teacher had been gang raped by six male
teachers for months. They threatened to fail her if she ever reported the rapes.
Now the students and parents are demanding the perpetrator of the crimes to be punished.
It is another matter what is going to be meted out tot them by the law of the land.
These happen when concerted efforts to educate the girls are bearing fruit. At least up to the primary level, there is an
increase in the number of girls who enroll in schools. The poor, simple children excitedly run to the schools and look what is awaiting them there!
If such incidents increase and if they become common knowledge, the intense effort to increase girl’ education could face a set back. Remember in India only about 54 percentage of women can read or write! There is a long way to go before the status of women can be even attempted to be improved.
