Old Testament Books-Mesopotomian and Egyptian Influence

Article Summary by: varghese

Original Author: Prof.P.A.Varghese

From the thousands of palm lets discovered in the Palestine area, we come to now the similarity between the
narrative of the Old Testament books and the Mesopotamian and Babylonian inscriptions.
The coloring of the stories in the OT books, as mentioned already,  is similar to the  legendary nature of the Egyptian myths. There is a great similarity between the story of the origin of Moses and that of  Sargon the great, who ruled Mesopotamia about 2360 B.C
But Israel is indebted to Mesopotamia more for many  of the cosmogonist ideas found in the Old Testament books.
There are critics who believe that the early narratives found in the Genesis came directly from Babylonia.
The narrative regarding the creation of the world reflects fully the way the primitive people reasoned. Such stories are found in many tribes around the world and they carry no significance whatsoever. .
